This morning I sent out Chapter 12. I used a much different creative process for this chapter than I have before. 10 and 11 practically wrote themselves because I knew exactly what scenes I needed to include and how I wanted the transitions and endings to go. For 7, 8, and 9 I had an objective: to reach Chapter 10 with all the necessary information intact to set up Act II, which takes place from Brand's point of view..
"Twelve" was a horse of a different color. This time I had no action scenes planned where some thing had to be accomplished. Nobody traveled from point A to point B. Instead, I had several thoughts, ideas, revelations, and conversations that needed to be conveyed somehow in a narrative without seeming like the author was dumping a ton of information on the reader in a bullet list.
So on the plane to Washington DC, I started chapter 12 with a list of goals. I captured nine points that I wanted the characters to address during Ch 12. Once that was done, I began with the first chronological point and just started writing. From there a couple of sections of pretty strong dialog emerged, and I'm pleased with the result.
I hope it works for everybody.
